Sorting Out Your Health So You Can Be Less Disillusioned

Health and Fitness. So often the neglected area of one’s life when your focus or attention is applied elsewhere, such as building wealth or raising a family. But if you get this pillar right, you would be shocked how much better you feel about everything in life, how much better you carry yourself and how others see you.

How would you rate your overall health for your stage of life? Are you carrying extra weight? Are you short of breath just walking? Do you sleep poorly or wake up tired?

You Cannot Lay All Of The Blame On Aging

You may put these issues down to just what happens when you get older. Fortunately, that is not totally true. Things do slow down in old age, no question, but you don’t have to accept that old age brings these depressing changes to your body, and then firmly believe there is nothing you can do about it.

Those who think they have not the time for bodily exercise

will sooner or later have to find time for illness.”

–Edward Stanley

The changes you may have witnessed might also come about through some of these other villains. Drinking too much alcohol or sugary drinks, smoking, eating poorly, not exercising etc. etc, all of the things you hear over and over and things that you increase doing as you get older.

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

You may hear this over and over but are you really hearing it? There is now so much evidence to support that movement and proper nutrition is the secret to the fountain of youth, and we as humans are doing ourselves a disservice by not being more intentional about managing them.

Premises for Having a Healthy Life

So here are my premises about health and fitness that help me focus on what is important and to be more intentional:

  1. I must have the attitude for the rest of my life that nothing is more important than my health. This means keeping strong through resistance training, fit through vigorous HIIT and healthy and vital by putting in good things
  2. My body is designed to be well and will be well if I treat it with respect.
  3. I can and will control my physical destiny by being intentional about how I treat my body. I will ensure that I do not abuse my body through lack of good nutrition and movement or by adding things to my body that can make it sick and weak
  4. I can and will control my biological age. By respecting my body, being more intentional about the maintenance of it, through proper exercise and nutrition I will have a biological age of a man in his mid-twenties
  5. It is important for me to look and feel the best I can, and be stronger and fitter each and every day I am alive

These premises have not always formed my life outlook, I tended to let life happen to me rather than consciously control it by laying out the facts in front of me. I also let stimulants such as nicotine, sugar, and alcohol take more priority than they deserved.

Translating Health Premises into a Strategy

Currently, I am translating these premises into a strategy by being intentional with a meal plan and exercise plan. I have also stopped drinking alcohol for 8 weeks. After much deliberation and trepidation, I found a challenge partner to hold me accountable. After only two weeks in and the transformation is mind-blowing. I have more energy, I sleep better and I have dropped weight but the real transformation comes with the increased motivation that I now possess, the motivation that drinking robbed me of.

In future posts, I will show how these premises for my health are linked to my vision for my healthy self and the big WHY? It is critical to get to the WHY? of what I am doing.
